How to: Detangling natural hair

Updated: Oct 6

Detangling natural hair can be challenging, but with the right technique and products, it can be manageable and less damaging. Here are some steps to help you detangle natural hair effectively:

1. Prepare Your Hair:

- Start with Moisturized Hair: Dry hair is more prone to breakage. Begin by dampening your hair with water or a water-based leave-in conditioner.

- Section Your Hair: Divide your hair into manageable sections using clips. This makes it easier to work through tangles and ensures even application of products.

2. Use the Right Tools:

- Wide-Tooth Comb: This helps to gently work through tangles without causing too much breakage.

- Detangling Brush: A brush designed specifically for detangling can be very effective.

- Fingers: Finger detangling can be very gentle and effective, allowing you to feel for knots and work them out slowly.

3. Apply NATURAL HAIR ROCKS Detangler or Conditioner:

- Leave-in Conditioner: Apply a generous amount to each section to provide slip, which helps the comb or brush glide through your hair more easily.

- Natural Hair Rocks Detangling Spray: A detangling spray can also add slip and make the process easier.

4. Detangle from Ends to Roots:

- Start at the Ends: Begin detangling at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots. This minimizes breakage and helps you tackle smaller knots first.

- Be Gentle: Avoid tugging or pulling on your hair. Use gentle, steady motions to work through tangles.

5. Rinse (if using a rinse-out conditioner):

- After detangling, rinse out the conditioner if you used a rinse-out formula. If you used a leave-in conditioner, there's no need to rinse.

6. Protect Your Hair:

- After detangling, consider protective styles .

7. Regular Maintenance:

- Regular detangling sessions can prevent large tangles from forming. Depending on your hair type and styling routine, this could be done weekly or more often.

Additional Tips:

- Avoid Detangling on Completely Dry Hair: This can cause breakage.

- Use Oils: Natural oils like coconut oil or olive oil can also provide slip and make detangling easier.

- Patience: Take your time to avoid causing damage to your hair.

By following these steps, you can make the detangling process smoother and less damaging for your natural hair.
